すぎます is added to the end of adjectives and verbs to express the idea of 'too much' - too big, too small, work too much, eat too much, etc. 
ます-い ADJECTIVE + すぎます
Remove the final い and replace with すぎます

せいふく　は、小さすぎます - My uniform is too small!

  • ちいさい - is small
    ちいさすぎます - is     too small
​この  せいふく　は、ちいさすぎます。
  • ​​​This uniform is too small!
  • たかい - is high/expensive
    たかすぎます - ​is     too high/expensive
​あの　パソコンは、たかすぎました　から、かいませんでした。
  • That computer was too expensive, so I didn't buy it.
-な ADJECTIVE + すぎます
​Leave off the な and add すぎます

あの  こども  は、げんきすぎます - That kid is over active!

  • げんきな - is lively/active
    げんきすぎます - is     too lively/active
​あの  こどもたち  は、げんきすぎて、うるさい。
  • ​Those kids are too lively - they're annoying.​
VERB + すぎます
Find the verb stem and add すぎます 

ケーキ  を  たべすぎました - I ate too much cake!

​ケーキ  を たべすぎました  から、おなか  が  いたく  なりました。
  • ​I ate too much cake, so my tummy became sore.
​コーヒー　を　のみすぎて、ねる　こと　が　できません。
  • I drank too much coffee and I can't sleep.​

たべます (eat) ::
VERB STEM = たべ 
  • たべ＋すぎます＝たべすぎます (eat too much)
たべすぎます - eat too much        (-masu form, present tense)
たべすぎました - ate too much     (-masu form, past tense)
たべすぎて  から - after eating too much     (-te form, followed by 'kara')
ねます (sleep) ::
​VERB STEM = ね 
  • ね＋すぎます＝ねすぎます (sleep too much/over-sleep)
のみます (drink) ::
VERB STEM = のみ 
  • のみ＋すぎます＝のみすぎます (drink too much)
のみすぎます - drink too much   (-masu form, present tense)
のみすぎました - drank too much     (-masu form, past tense)
のみすぎて  から - after drinking too much     (-te form, followed by 'kara')
はたらきます (work) ::
​VERB STEM = はたらき
  • はたらき＋すぎます＝はたらきすぎます (work too much)
