Making Recommendations and Giving Advice 
しないほうがいい

We use しないほうがいい to give advice and make recommendations regarding what people ought NOT to do.

• Use the plain present negative form of the verb (～ない), plus ほうがいい

EXAMPLES

ファストフードは、あまり食べないほうがいいです。

• You shouldn't eat too much fast food.

しゅくだいをわすれないほうがいいです。

• You shouldn't forget to do your homework.

ひつようがないし、高いから、買わないほうがいいと思います。

• It's not necessary, and what's more, it's expensive, so I think you shouldn't buy it. (Or, in natural English, "I don't think you should buy it".)

天気よほうによると、あした雨がふるので、そとであそばないほうがいいです。

• According to the weather forecast, it's going to rain tomorrow, so you shouldn't play outside.
