PRACTICE MAKING SENTENCES WITH MORE THAN ONE ADJECTIVE ON QUIZLET

If you want to review adjectives before going on with this learning, click here.
A series of adjectives can be combined into one sentence by changing the end of an adjective to link it to what comes after it.
We are actually making the て-form of the adjective when we do this.
  • ちいさい + べんりbecomes ちいさくて、べんり - Small and convenient
  • べんり+ ちいさい becomes べんりで、 ちいさい - Convenient and small

  • おおきい + にぎやか (な)  (Big + Lively)

  • ​​Tokyo is a big, bustling town.
Compare with:
とうきょう は、大きい まち です。そして、にぎやかな まち です。
  • Tokyo is a big town. In addition, it is a bustling town.
​​The new structure sounds more sophisticated, doesn't it?

  • にぎやか (な) + おもしろい  (Lively + Interesting)

-い ADJECTIVE + ANOTHER ADJECTIVE
Remove the final い from the first adjective, and replace with くて

 ちいさい - is small : :     ちいさくて - is small and...
 おおきい - is big : :      おおきくて - is big and...
  ふるい - is old : :       ふるくて - is old and...
あたらしい - is new : :     あたらしくて - is new and...
 きたない - is dirty : :      きたなくて - is dirty and...
つまらない - is dull : :      つまらなくて - is dull and...
​おもしろい - is interesting : :  おもしろくて - is interesting and...

-な ADJECTIVE + ANOTHER ADJECTIVE
​Leave off the 
な from the first adjective, and add で

 きれい (な) - is pretty/clean : : きれい で - is pretty/clean and...
 べんり (な) - is convenient : :  べんり で - is convenient and...
 ふべん (な) - is inconvenient : : ふべん で - is inconvenient and...
 すてき (な) - is stylish : :    すてき で - is stylish and...
 しずか (な) - is quiet : :       しずか で - is quiet and...
にぎやか (な) - is lively : :     にぎやか で - is lively and...

の ADJECTIVES, e.g. the colours - むらさき(の);ピンク(の) - behave in the same way as
​な ADJECTIVES. Leave off the の and add で.

When we use this structure, we are essentially joining two simple sentences to make a more interesting/less repetitive, compound sentence.
  • This structure works with both adjectives and verbs, just by using the て-form as the link between sentences. ​
