Asking Someone to Do Something, Using
　～て　ほしい

We use ～てほしい to express what we want someone to do, and～ないでほしい to say what we want them NOT to do.　（ほしい means 'want')
  • WARNING: Do not use this form with a superior (anybody that is socially above us).  ​
EXAMPLES (in the positive):
せいとたちは、男の子​​に　しずかにしてほしい　です。
  • The students want the boy to be quiet.
Japanese isn't always specific - sometimes we leave out the bits that are obvious:
しずかにしてほしい　です。
  • (They) want (him) to be quiet.
男の人は、おきゃくさん​​​に　本を　買ってほしい　です。
  • The man wants customers to buy the books. 
Once more, leaving out the bits that are obvious:
おきゃくさん​​​に　本を　買ってほしい　です。
  • (He?) wants customers to buy the books. 
だれかに　てつだってほしいなあ。
  • I wish somebody would help me.
EXAMPLES (in the negative):
私は、みんなに　川にコミを　すてないでほしい　です。
  • I want everybody not to thow rubbish into the river. 
Once more, leaving out the bits that are obvious:
川にゴミを　すてないでほしい　です。
  • (I) want (everybody) not to thow rubbish into the river. 
このケーキは、あしたのパーティーのためだから、わたしは、あなたに　このケーキを　食べないでほしい　ですよ。
  • This cake is for tomorrow's party, so I don't want you to eat this cake. 
Once more, leaving out the bits that are obvious:
このケーキは、あしたのパーティーのためだから、食べないでほしい　ですよ。
  • This cake is for tomorrow's party, so (I) don't want (you) to eat it.
