Phrases with しか can be translated into English as "nothing but" / "nothing except for" / "only".
  • The Japanese phrase will ALWAYS be in the negative (negative verb ending), but might translate into negative or positive in English.
れいぞうこに　みずしか　入って いません。
  • There's nothing but water in the fridge.
  • There's only water in the fridge.
おとうとは　ラーメンしか　たべない です。
  • My brother eats nothing but ramen.
  • My brother eats only ramen.
お金は　すこししか　ない です。
  • I have only a little money.
あら！くずしか　のこって いません。
  • Oh dear! There's nothing left except for scraps.
  • Oh dear! There's only scraps left.
森には しかしか いない です。
  • There's nothing but deer in the forest.​
