This structure is used when we want to ask or tell someone where a particular thing is.

• We start the sentence with the thing we're looking for / asking about. 

QUESTION FORM: WHERE IS THE ... ?

(Thing) は どこ  に  あります か。

• Where is (the thing)? 

ボール は どこ  に  あります か。

• Where is the ball? 

​We can also use です to ask and say where things are. Notice that we don't need to use the particle に when we use です。
ボール は どこ  です か。

Let's take a look at how to ask and say where something is.

やさい は どこ に  あります か。

• Where are the vegetables?

​やさい は れいぞうこ の なか  に  あります。

• The ​vegetables are in(side) the fridge.

Same thing, but with です instead of あります:
やさい は どこ です か。

• Where are the vegetables?

​やさい は れいぞうこ の なか  です。

• The ​vegetables are in(side) the fridge.

ほん は どこ に  あります か。

• Where is the book?

​ほん は つくえ の うえ  に  あります。

• The ​book is on (top of) the desk.

Same thing, but with です instead of あります:
​ほん は どこ です か。

• Where is the book?
