～(の)ために
in order to ～/ for the sake of ～

～(の)ために means ‘for the sake of’, or ‘in order to’.  
  • ～ために comes after a verb in the plain form non-past tense.
  • ～のために comes after a noun.
Examples after a verb:
日本に行くために、アルバイトをしています。
  • In order to go to Japan, I'm doing a part-time job.
日本語をべんきょうするために、日本に行くつもりです。
  • In order to study Japanese, I intend to go to Japan.
Examples after a noun - notice the "の":
りょこうのために、お金 を ためて います。
  • For the sake of my trip, I'm saving money.
友だち の たんじょうび のために、プレゼントを 買いました。
  • For (the sake of) my friend's birthday, I bought a present.
